Portrait painting and waste

Oil paint waste: What is the similarity between oil paint and a pencil? In both you use only 40%, the rest is thrown away.

A sharp pencil fills your trash with waste.

When sharpening your pencil a part of the pencil always disappears. I estimate that more than half is left in the sharpener. What a pity!

Waste?

No difference with oil paint. A large part of the paint must be removed from your palette because it begins drying. That hurts because paint is expensive.

When you feel you can bring dried paint back to life with medium you make a big mistake. Don´t be stingy on oil paint and pamper yourself with fresh stuff! Eventually you will see that reflected in your painting.

Some piles of paint that still can be used, I put aside and I clean my palette.

Tip:

You can also use the paint that is still usable to prepare a canvas or panel.
Make a smooth mixture with your palette knife of the remaining colours on your palette. Apply it to an already prepared panel or canvas. Allow it to dry for weeks and you have the most fantastic underlay to start painting immediately.
